Rabies case reported in New Jersey

New Jersey  01/20/10  reminderusa.net:  Cumberland County Public Health Coordinator Herb Roeschke announced last Wednesday that the department received test results that indicated a raccoon, found dead in Upper Deerfield Township on Jan. 9 tested positive for rabies.  A resident found a raccoon biting his dog’s leg after the dog returned into his house at nighttime. After the resident tried to pry the raccoon’s mouth off the dog’s leg, he then killed the raccoon with a knife.
In the process of the scuffle, the resident was cut by the knife, leaving himself exposed to the raccoon’s saliva. There were signs of saliva exposure to the dog and possible exposure to the resident’s spouse.
