Connecticut 05/30/13 Hartford County: A 200 pound black bear sow with two yearling cubs that attempted to attack a dog at the 49 Avondale Road home of Sharon Flannery in West Hartford attacked the dog’s owner instead, then the sow and her cubs climbed into a tree in another yard. Flannery was treated and released. The sow was euthanized in the public interest, but the two cubs were old enough to be returned to the wild. – See

Mountain Lions:

Officials believe the lion is hunting and will move on if people don’t offer food and take small pets inside at night. – See

DSC_9491_mountain_lion_family_crop-1South Dakota 05/29/13 Pennington and Fall River counties: State officials drove a mountain lion and her cubs hunting in Keystone back into the Black Hills, but six days later they were back hunting adjacent to the post office, businesses, and homes. On May 5-6 the lions were euthanized. In a separate May 6th incident, a male lion allegedly watching walkers and cyclists along a trail in the Angostura State Recreaton Area was also shot. – See


pouncing-cougarAlberta 05/28/13 Banff National Park: A reluctant caller reported a mountain lion attack on Thursday saying he was knocked to the ground and felt he had no choice but to battle the animal by hitting it with his skateboard. The caller said he was wearing earbuds, which allowed the lion to sneak up and attack him from behind. Fortunately, the victim managed to stun the lion long enough to makes his escape. Other reports indicate the lion is clearly hunting the area. – See

New Jersey 06/01/13 Atlantic County: A cat in Hamilton Township that displayed suspicious symptoms has tested positive for rabies. – See

New Jersey 05/31/13 Mercer County: A cat belonging to someone in May’s Landing has been euthanized after showing symptoms of rabies. Further testing confirmed he cat was rabid. – See

New Jersey 05/30/13 Passaic County: A raccoon found in the vicinity of West End Avenue in Little Falls on May 22nd has tested positive for rabies. – See

However, there is no proof the animal killed on Seney Drive and Anderson Hill Road was the same one reported to have attacked a 6-year-old girl late last month who was playing in the family’s backyard on Somerset Avenue. – See

A number of children were reportedly taking pictures of the animal but it is not known if any of the children were exposed to the virus. – See

Officials confirmed the animal did have rabies. Anyone experiencing direct contact with a fox this past weekend in the vicinity of W. Market St and Central Blvd. or Oak Hollow apartments in W. Bethlehem  should seek immediate medical advice. – See

rabiesAlert521d4-1Texas 05/31/13 Taylor County: by Robert Herriman – The City of Abilene Animal Services is advising citizens who may have visited the Animal Shelter, located at 925 S. 25 Street, between the dates of Wednesday, May 22 and Friday, May 24 to call 325-437-4585 and leave the requested information after a puppy at the shelter tested positive for the lethal virus, rabies, according to a news release Thursday.  The puppy, a Blue Heeler mix, was brought in to the shelter on Wednesday, May 22, with no unusual symptoms. By Friday, May 24, the puppy was acting erratically and, for the safety of the general population, was humanely euthanized. KTXS 12 reports that at least three people were given rabies prophylaxis, including two Abilene city workers. – See

Virginia 05/30/13 Henrico County: A raccoon involved in a fight with two dogs on Sunday in the 8300 block of Woodman Road has tested positive for rabies. – See

West Virginia 05/31/13 Monongalia County: A raccoon and a fox from the area have tested positive for rabies. The fox bit an 86-year-old man at this Fairview Road home on Friday. – See
